Christie's Jersey Shore Trip Washed Out

NJ governor had planned week of Jersey beach visits

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was headed to the beach before the weather put a damper on his plans.

Christie had planned the first of three beach and boardwalk visits on Tuesday with a trip to Ocean City.

But the governor postponed the trip as heavy showers and thunderstorms swept across the state on Tuesday afternoon.

The governor planned to tout his administration's commitment to protecting the state's beaches and waterways during his trip to Cape May County.

The governor's office said the shore events will be rescheduled.

Last week he approved $650 million in no-cost and low-cost loans for water quality and protection projects. Some $450 million are for projects that clean up water used for fishing and swimming.

The rest is for projects that protect drinking water supplies.

More than 170 applications are pending.

Over the years, the waters have been compromised by a combination of pollution and overdevelopment in some areas. Scientists said lawn fertilizers have been a major factor in creating an overload of nitrogen which has killed off native aquatic species.
