PBCS: “Avengers” Again Lays Waste to the Competition With Best 2nd Week Ever

Each week we run the box office numbers through our proprietary formula that tabulates receipts, the film's budget, the number of screens and critical response to see not just who made the most money, but who's leading the PopcornBiz Championship Series.

Last week "The Avengers" shattered the box office record for best opening weekend, this week they shattered the record for best second weekend, taking in more than $100 million, beating "Avatar"'s old record by almost $28 million. It was a performance so dominant that Earth's mightiest heroes rendered box office titan Johnny Depp and his new film, "Dark Shadows," little more than an afterthought. Let's take a look at the top 10 films, via Box Office Mojo:

1. Marvel's The Avengers - $103,163,000
2. Dark Shadows - $28,805,000
3. Think Like a Man - $6,300,000
4. The Hunger Games - $4,400,000
5. The Lucky One - $4,055,000
6. The Pirates! Band of Misfits - $3,200,000
7. The Five-Year Engagement - $3,100,000
8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - $2,650,000

In just 19 days since it debuted overseas, "The Avengers" has made more than $1 billion globally, including $373 million domestically, poised to pass "Hunger Games" on Monday or Tuesday as the highest grossing film of the year.

Running the numbers--weeks in release, critical acclaim, budget, number of screens--through our proprietary formula, "The Avengers" haul looks no less impressive, as the film racked up a PBCS score more than seven times its nearest competition:

1. Marvel's The Avengers - 1428
2. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - 183
3. Think Like a Man - 171
4. The Hunger Games - 44
5. Dark Shadows - 35
6. The Five-Year Engagement - 14
7. The Pirates! Band of Misfits - 12
8. Chimpanzee - 10
9. The Lucky One - 9
10. Girl in Progress - 4

But life at the top is likely over for "The Avengers", as "Battleship" is rolling into theaters this coming weekend. The film has been doing crazy business overseas, and features two of America's favorite things: aliens and jingoism. Throw in some special effects and an insanely good-looking cast, and a $100 million opening weekend seems entirely possible.
