3-year-old safe after stolen car in Newark yields AMBER Alert; Police hunt for suspect

NBC Universal, Inc.

A child was found safe after an AMBER Alert was triggered in New Jersey's largest city as a result of a stolen car, according to police, who are now looking for the person responsible.

The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. Tuesday in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage. A vehicle was stolen just off Wilson Avenue near an auto parts store, police said.

Surveillance video shows the suspect in a jacket walking toward the car from across the street. Another camera angle showed the car speeding away.

Less than a minute later, a man — the child's father — came out and was in disbelief, searching for whomever was responsible for taking his car that had his 3-year-old child inside. He then got into another car and went after the car thieves.

The young boy was missing for more than two hours, with an AMBER Alert issued just before 10 a.m.

Under an hour later, police had located the vehicle in Jersey City. The toddler was found inside the car, unharmed, according to police.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with no further information available.
