It's a question of "what would you do?" And police hope most people wouldn't have the reaction this woman did, as she is caught on surveillance video at the Wawa on the 5300 block of Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights, picking up money that someone else dropped out of their pocket, according to investigators.
As Upper Darby Police Superintendant Michael Chitwood showed NBC10's Byron Scott surveillance video of the incident, he gives a play by play of what happened. He says the unsuspecting man was just trying to buy some water and a snack, but as he reaches into his pocket for money, two wads of cash fall from his pocket to the ground.
In the video, you see the woman behind him, wearing a purple shirt, reaching down and grabbing the wads of cash. Chitwood says she looks around to make sure no one is onto her, then places the items she planned on purchasing on the counter, and bolts out the door.
The wads of money totaled $2300, and the victim Jim Duffy, says he was hoping to use the money to buy another car, police said.
"When you look at that lady picking up two wads of money and out the door she goes, so much for being a Good Samaritan, all she had to do what tap the guy on the shoulder and say 'hey buddy you dropped something,'" Chitwood said.
Upper Darby Police are hoping someone will recognize the woman in the video and give them a call.
"Obviously there is no moral character here and that's the sad thing when you look at society. You'd like to think that somebody drops money, you tap them on the shoulder, you dropped your money - here's your money, the guy probably would have given her a reward," Chitwood told NBC10.
