Woman Gets 2 Years' Probation for Giving Teen Pre-Crash Beer

A 25-year-old western Pennsylvania woman will spend two years on probation for serving beer to teens at a party she hosted, before one of them was killed in a fatal crash.

The Washington Observer-Reporter says 25-year-old Elizabeth Ann Smith, of Blaine Township, was sentenced Wednesday in Washington County.

Smith was sentenced after pleading guilty to four counts of furnishing alcohol to minors. Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2011 death of 19-year-old Christopher Wetzel.

Wetzel was killed when he crashed. Two other party guests, including a 17-year-old girl, were injured.

Defense attorney Joseph Yablonski called the crash an unfortunate accident and said the poor condition of Wetzel's car was a factor in the crash.
