Police say Axel Baretto ambushed a car with seven teenagers inside outside a house in January 2012, firing more than a dozen times.
The gunfire killed two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old, and injured the 16-year-old driver.
Prosecutors say the teens were unarmed and shot from behind as they drove away. They are seeking the death penalty.
Defense lawyer Jack McMahon says the 30-year-old Baretto was trying to protect his family from a violent gang.
