Man Dies, Woman Hurt, Church Hit as Bullets Fly

A man died and a woman was hurt as stray bullets hit a church overnight.

Police say the victims were standing near 26th and Cramer Streets in Camden, N.J. around 10 p.m. on Wednesday when an unknown gunman opened fire.

Police found Joseph Devine, 29, in a nearby alley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds despite wearing a bulletproof vest. Medics pronounced Devine dead at the scene.

Police also located Tonya Hudson, 21, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and rushed her to the Cooper University Hospital Trauma Center where she was in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery early Thursday.

A witness told NBC10 that he was feeling lucky to be alive after bullets struck a church near 25th and Federal Streets where he was working to fix a drum set.

"We were protected by God tonight," said church member Joshua Figueroa.

"We heard about seven to eight gunshots, it was like boom, boom, boom... we all just fell to the ground and started crawling," said  Figueroa. "We made sure we were safe and then we checked outside and called 911.

"I could have died tonight... I was just scared, it woke me up."
