Standoff Ends After Police Disarm Knife-Wielding Man

Four police officers disarmed a man who was wielding a knife inside a northern New Jersey home and telling the officers to "shoot him.''

No injuries were reported in the incident, which began around 7:20 p.m. Friday when Elmwood Park police were called to a Summit Avenue.

A woman there told them her brother was armed with a knife, and the officers soon encountered the visibly agitated man. Authorities tell The Record the man began yelling and tried to get two knives that were tucked into his waistband.

The officers tried to calm the man, who repeatedly said, "Shoot me.''

But when he moved toward one of the officers, another pepper sprayed him in the face. The officers were able to restrain him following a violent struggle.
