Adult Son Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity in Mother's Killing in South Jersey Home

A South Jersey man charged in the killing of his mother on Father's Day last year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Burlington County Times reported a Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday during a bench trial that 45-year-old Herbert Rowlette is a danger to himself and others. Public defender Kevin Walker said the Pemberton man will be sent to a psychiatric facility.

Prosecutors said Rowlette called police in June 2014 to report a killing in the home he shared with his mother. Officers found 71-year-old Maryanne Rowlette lying on the floor.

The Burlington County medical examiner ruled she died from blunt trauma and compression of the head and neck.

Walker said his client has had a lifetime of mental illness and there's no disputing he committed the crime.
