Sinkhole Threatens to Topple 80-foot Transmission Tower in Pennsylvania

Officials fear an 80-foot-tall electric transmission tower in eastern Pennsylvania could topple after drenching rains caused a sinkhole to form at its base.

The Morning Call reports officials first noticed the hazard around 8 p.m. Monday. Bethlehem Fire Lt. Allan Burghardt says officials notified more than 20 households and suggested they leave. Only the two families closest to the PPL tower left.

The sinkhole was at the base of one leg of the tower and showed signs of spreading to a second leg.

Burghardt says the tower wasn't leaning and no one in the neighborhood had lost power.

A PPL crew was standing by.

The sinkhole formed after heavy rains pounded the region Monday night. Flooding was reported throughout the area.
