Toy Gun Causes Philly School Lockdown, Police Say

A report of a young man with a gun led to a hours-long lockdown at a Philadelphia school Friday, but police said the only thing found was to be a toy gun behind a radiator.

Two classroom-by-classroom sweeps took place at Gen. Louis Wagner Middle School on West Chelten Avenue after the initial report from the principal, police said. A student is believed to have told the principal about seeing someone armed with a firearm.

Police put the West Oak Lane school on lockdown about 8:45 a.m., then used K-9 units to search the entire building.

"We have SWAT, K-9, along with patrol, all over the school... conducting a search," Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

No injuries were reported.
