New Jersey Prosecutors Identify Man Shot, Killed by Police

Authorities have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by police outside a New Jersey home.

Ocean County prosecutors said 21-year-old Julian Hoffman, of Brick Township, appeared to have a black semi-automatic handgun when he approached two township officers late Sunday night.

The officers had responded to the home after a male caller told a 911 operator he was going to "create a disturbance" along Cherry Wood Circle and then hung up.

Prosecutors identified the responding officers as 31-year-old Jay Nye and 25-year-old Ryan Osborn, who are both assigned to the patrol division. Nye joined the force in September 2011, while Osborn was hired in April 2013.

Officials have said Hoffman was shot several times, but it's not known if one or both officers discharged their weapons. It's also not known if the weapon Hoffman apparently had was real or a fake.

Nye and Osborn have both been placed on administrative leave while the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office investigates the shooting.
