Elderly Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Tractor-Trailer in Delaware

An elderly pedestrian died after he was struck by a tractor-trailer in Delaware Tuesday morning.

About 6:35 a.m., a 78-year-old man was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of US Rt. 13 south of DE Rt. 141, in New Castle, in an eastbound direction.

As the male pedestrian entered into the traffic lanes, Delaware State Police say he stepped into the path of a tractor-trailer, which was traveling southbound on US Rt. 13.

The driver of the tractor-trailer braked sharply and swerved to his left in an effort to miss the male pedestrian. However, the pedestrian fell into the roadway, where he was then struck by the tractor-trailer.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police.
