Off-Duty Trooper at Home, Kills Armed Man: Police

Police in western Pennsylvania say an off-duty state trooper fatally shot an armed man who refused to leave the officer's property.

Authorities say the unnamed trooper killed 25-year-old Kristopher Barkus on Friday night in Butler.

Police Lt. Eric Hermick tells the Butler Eagle the officer was home with his wife and children when Barkus and another man arrived unannounced at the house.

The trooper came out to the front porch and asked the men to leave. Police say Barkus refused and allegedly brandished a gun.

Hermick says the trooper yelled for Barkus to drop his weapon. When Barkus reportedly did not, Hermick says the officer shot him in the chest.

The trooper and the victim's companion were not injured.

An investigation is ongoing.
