Jurors have convicted a Hillside man of passion provocation manslaughter in a Memorial Day shooting that left a Newark man dead at a family barbecue.
Prosecutors say 21-year-old Richard Whatley and a friend were asked to leave the 2013 party after they got into an argument with a woman.
Prosecutors say they returned and Whatley shot and killed 32-year-old Teshon Clegg as he tried to intervene.
Prosecutors had charged Whatley with murder, but jurors found him guilty of the lesser charge following the five-week trial.
He'll face up to ten years in prison when he's sentenced in June.
