Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel rescinded furloughs imposed Oct. 1, saying the employees contributed to military readiness.

The employees support the main 305th Air Mobility Command, the 87th Air Base Wing, 621st Air Contingency Response Team and the Air Force Expeditionary Center.

Base spokeswoman Angelica Lopez told the Asbury Park Press the base is only supporting missions of national and public safety.

The base's commissaries also have reopened for military personnel and retirees.

In total about 6,700 civilians work on the base.
