College Student Goes Missing During Pre-Thanksgiving Night Out in Manayunk

UPDATE: Search for Shane Montgomery Enters 3rd Day

Hundreds of people handed out fliers Black Friday in hopes of finding a Philadelphia area college student who has not been seen since spending the night before Thanksgiving out with friends.

Twenty-one-year-old Shane Montgomery was last seen at Kildare’s Irish Pub on Main Street in Manayunk around 1:45 a.m. Thursday.

The West Chester University senior had spent the night of Thanksgiving Eve -- an evening many friends reunite while home for the holiday -- barhopping with a few friends, said his mother Karen Montgomery.

"He told me he was going to Main Street with a few friends and my nephew," Montgomery said.

Montgomery filed a police report after the Roxborough native didn’t return home. Philadelphia Police considered the disappearance suspicious, but suspected no foul play. The investigation has included the use of K-9s and helicopters.

Montgomery said her son’s friends told her he didn’t appear inebriated when he left the bar. Before Shane left Kildare's, he bumped into the DJ table prompting a bouncer to ask him to leave, she said. The bouncer spotted Shane make a right and head towards Green Lane, Montgomery said.

Friends tried to contact him, but had no luck, she said.

“They tried to text message Shane that they were getting ready to leave,” Montgomery said. “Of course being Shane, it died — he never charges his phone.”

Officers could be seen searching for Shane in Manayunk Friday afternoon. Police also sought surveillance video from local businesses in hopes of retracing Shane’s steps after he left Kildare’s. Some of the video appeared very grainy.

More than 300 people volunteered Friday -- gathering at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Rector Street, which Shane's friends and family used as a staging area for the search. After wrapping up the search Friday, Montgomery said they will resume their search at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Shane, who weighs about 140 pounds and stands 5-foot-11-inches tall, was wearing a buttoned- down gray shirt, gray hoodie and jeans when he left the bar. He also has a unique Celtic cross tattoo on his shoulder, according to police.

A $10,000 reward was being offered for reliable information leading to Shane’s safe return. Montgomery asked that anyone who sees him call her at 215-920-2569. Anyone with information is also urged to contact Philadelphia Police Det. Valentino at 215-686-3353/54.
