One man is dead after being struck by a train in Newark, Delaware.

The accident happened on the tracks behind the 200 block of Interchange Boulevard just off Elkton Road on Saturday, around 5:54 p.m.

Timothy Vettori, 37, of Newark was standing on the tracks with a bicycle when an Amtrak train travelling southbound came towards him.

Police say the train initiated emergency braking procedures but was unable to stop before striking Vettori.

Police are unsure why Vettori was on the tracks at the time. No foul play is suspected however.
