The U.S. Attorney General Office unsealed a superseding indictment Thursday charging William J. O’Brien III, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, with causing a death through the illegal distribution of a controlled substance.
The indictment charges eight new defendants with O’Brien, 49, of Philadelphia, in a second conspiracy to distribute controlled substances including oxycodone, methadone, and amphetamines.
O’Brien and his ex-wife, a ninth defendant, Elizabeth Hibbs, 54, was charged with money laundering, bankruptcy fraud, and making false statements under oath in a bankruptcy proceeding.
The local doctor was charged earlier this year with running a so-called "pill mill" operation out of his medical offices in Philadelphia and Bucks County.
