Lehigh Valley Zoo to Welcome New Giraffe

A Pennsylvania zoo says they will be welcoming a new giraffe after a young giraffe was fatally injured by its father there earlier this year.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo said Tuesday its bringing 20-month-old Tatu to join the giraffe Murphy and form a bachelor herd. They say the move was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums under its Species Survival Program.

Murphy's 6-year-old male offspring Ernie died two days after they were brought to the zoo in May. Investigators say Ernie suffered a blow to his neck from Murphy while leaning into an adjoining stall.

Zoo officials say Tatu and Murphy will be introduced to each other over a period of several months, after which the new giraffe will be introduced to the public.
