A family member told NBC10 that the grandmother had died while trying to save her grandkids from the flames

NBC Universal, Inc.

A baby girl and her grandmother died when a fire broke out at a New Jersey home Friday morning, family and officials said.

The child was only 9 months old, while the grandmother was in her 40s, Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said. Officials had earlier said the deceased woman was in her 20s.

The row home fire started a little before 4 a.m. on the 200 block of Woodlawn Avenue in Hamilton Township, causing a partial roof collapse.

A family member told NBC10 that the grandmother had died while trying to save her grandkids from the flames. Three other people were hospitalized with injuries, DeBlasio said.

Firefighters said multiple people became trapped, with rain making the rescue effort more difficult.

The investigation into the blaze remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call detective Anthony Sturchio at 609-989-6406 or email mchtftips@mercercounty.org.
