Philadelphia firefighters have been forced to move due to possible asbestos inside their firehouse.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers announced on Monday that Ladder 15’s firehouse on the 1600 block of Foulkrod Street needed immediate maintenance repair. In addition to Ladder 15, the building also houses Medic Unit 47.
Fire Department Executive Chief Richard Davison told NBC10 maintenance workers discovered what appears to be asbestos wrapped around some of the pipes of the firehouse. Ladder 15 firefighters and Medic Unit 47 were immediately relocated. The fire department has hired a company to test the pipes and make sure the building is made safe from any asbestos.
Despite their relocation, Ladder 15 firefighters and Medic Unit 47 are still providing services for Philadelphia citizens. They have been moved to the closest firehouses with available space. The Fire Department’s Fire Communications Center will monitor all call activity in Ladder 15 and Medic 47’s first response areas.
