Ex-Chief in South Jersey Admits to Receiving $46K in Bogus Reimbursements

A former volunteer fire chief in South Jersey has admitted to receiving about $46,000 by submitting fraudulent invoices and receipts for reimbursement.

Acting Attorney General John Hoffman says 51-year-old Eugene Spiegel pleaded guilty to conspiracy Thursday. The Seaville resident and his son were indicted in September 2014.

Spiegel and his son served with the Seaville Fire and Rescue Company, which uncovered irregularities in training and clothing reimbursements through an internal review and reported the records to authorities.

Prosecutors are recommending a five-year prison sentence for Spiegel.

Charges are still pending against his son, 20-year-old Jacob Spiegel. He's accused of receiving a $1,275 reimbursement for a training class that prosecutors say he never attended.
