Crews Rescue Dolphin Trapped in NJ Creek

Officials spent ten hours trying to rescue a dolphin from a small creek in Middle Township, Cape May County.

The stranded dolphin was spotted in the creek near Hand Avenue Sunday. Officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center as well as firefighters struggled through knee-deep mud to wrestle the 7-foot dolphin into a net and out of the water.

The dolphin appeared to be healthy and was returned safely to Delaware Bay.

“We assumed that we’d be better letting him go there where he was more familiar with it than on the outside where there are tons more people,” said MMSC director Bob Schoelkopf.

Experts say the dolphin may have been looking for food and was trapped during low-tide.
