College Students May Need New IDs to Vote

Pa. colleges work to make sure student ID cards comply with the new state law

Colleges in Pennsylvania are working to ensure students can use their campus IDs to cast ballots this fall if the state's new voting law is upheld.

The tougher regulations require voters to show photo ID beginning with the Nov. 6 presidential election. The ID must have an expiration date to be valid.

Several colleges say they will issue new ID cards with expiration dates to comply with the law. Others are offering stickers with expiration dates to put on existing IDs.

Opponents have sued to block the 5-month-old law. They say it's unconstitutional and will disenfranchise about 1 million state residents. Supporters say it is necessary to prevent voting fraud.

Lawyers presented closing arguments in the case on Thursday. A judge is expected to rule this month.
