College Student Identified as Man Killed While Crossing Street

The man killed by a vehicle while crossing a busy Belchertown street last weekend has been identified as a University of Massachusetts-Amherst student from New Jersey.

The Northwestern district attorney's office announced Monday that the man who died Saturday was 20-year-old Matthew Schiek, of Freehold, New Jersey.

Authorities say Schiek was crossing Route 9 just before 2 a.m. when he was struck by an eastbound pickup truck.

The death remains under investigation.

The driver has cooperated with investigators and drugs, alcohol and erratic operation do not appear to be factors.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that Schiek was a mechanical and industrial engineering major. A group of friends said in a statement that he was ``great student, athlete, musician, but most of all an amazing friend.''
