Father Convicted in Son's Death Gets Decades in Prison

An eastern Pennsylvania man convicted of third-degree murder in the death of his 4-month-old son has been sentenced to 20½ to 67 years in state prison.

A Berks County jury in October also convicted 29-year-old Eugene Jimenez of Reading of child endangerment and aggravated assault in the February 2009 death of Ayden Jimenez.

Authorities said the child had bleeding in the brain, broken ribs and other injuries that doctors called consistent with child abuse.

The Reading Eagle reports that Jimenez's attorney sought a lighter sentence Friday, saying his client had learning difficulties and no record of violent crimes. Prosecutors sought a more severe term, saying the defendant lacked remorse.

Judge Thomas Parisi said he hoped that decades in prison would help Jimenez develop better skills to cope with anger.
