The Pennsylvania SPCA is asking for your help in finding the person(s) responsible for putting two baby raccoons in a closed trash bag this past weekend.
On Saturday, a local resident spotted a moving garbage bag on Lawrence Street in South Philadelphia. After the Animal Care and Control Team was notified, they quickly contacted the Pennsylvania SPCA.
After an officer arrived, two raccoons were found trapped inside the bag, one of whom was in need of immediate medical care. The raccoons were immediately taken to the PSPCA’s shelter hospital before a transfer to Schuylkill Center’s Wildlife Clinic.
"When animals of any kind are left inside a trash bag, the intent is quite clear," said Nicole Wilson, Director of the PSPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. "We hope that someone saw something, or knows something, and will come forward with that information."
The individual(s) responsible can face animal cruelty charges from both the Game Commission and the PSPCA for leaving these animals to die.
Additional monitoring will occur at the Schuylkill Center’s Wildlife Clinic until the babies are deemed stable and can return to the wild.
