Teen Trapped in Flipped SUV for 18 Hours After Crash

Accident went unnoticed until man went to grill outside his house

A Lancaster County man is being lauded as a hero for helping to rescue a teenager trapped in her overturned sport-utility vehicle unnoticed for 18 hours.

Authorities say 49-year-old Brad Shearer helped save the life of 18-year-old Brooke Spence, whose vehicle flipped over around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night in West Hempfield Township.

Police say the injured Spence was trapped in the car in underbrush by a creek until Shearer noticed the vehicle while getting ready to grill on his deck around 5 p.m. Sunday.

“I was looking down in the driver’s side window and I saw something move. She was laying on her back and picked her head back. Then I could see her face. I went, ‘Oh my god she’s alive. There’s someone in there,’” Shearer told our sister-station WGAL.

He found Spence calm and conscious, and had his wife call 911. The teen was in fair condition at Lancaster General Hospital Monday.

Police say her parents had been away on vacation.

Authorities are investigating what caused Spence to veer off the roadway.
