South Jersey Mayor Pleads Guilty to DWI

A southern New Jersey mayor has pleaded guilty a drunken driving charge, blaming alcohol and medication for impairing him last year.

Paulsboro Mayor W. Jeffery Hamilton apologized after his guilty plea Wednesday, telling reporters outside a Salem County courthouse that he made a mistake and wants to move on.

Police pulled Hamilton over in the early morning hours of Dec. 20 after a woman reported a car swerving nearby. He was arrested after sobriety and breath tests. Police dashcam video showed Hamilton undergoing a sobriety test before being taken into custody.

His attorney, Charles Block, says Hamilton was on several medications that exacerbated the effects of alcohol on him.

A judge suspended Hamilton's license for three months and ordered him to complete a mandatory educational program as part of his sentence.
