Police were searching for a hitchhiker who shot a Pennsylvania driver after getting into a struggle with a back seat passenger who tried to take the gun.
Penn Hills police say the driver, 18-year-old Curtis Bell Jr., was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Bell pulled over about 8 p.m. Sunday to give the hitchhiker a ride. From a distance, Bell thought he recognized the man, police said. When he got nearer, Bell realized he did not know the man, but gave him a ride anyway.
The hitchhiker pulled a gun, apparently planning to rob the driver or steal his car, but a juvenile passenger in the back seat struggled to get the weapon before it fired, hitting Bell.
