Man Shot After Hostage Crisis: Police

Suspect in critical condition.

A man was shot in the chest by police early Tuesday after allegedly holding a woman hostage, authorities say.

The suspect is in critical condition.

Around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, police responded to a barricade situation near Tabor Road and Arbor Streets in the Olney section of Philadelphia. Police say the situation started when the suspect held his ex-girlfriend against her will.

After the authorities had arrived, the 23-year-old man was threatening to harm the woman or himself, police say.

While the woman would eventually get away unharmed, authorities claim that the suspect shot himself in the head -- but somehow was still able to go on with the standoff.

Some time later, the SWAT team came up through the basement of the house and confronted the suspect. He then pointed his gun at the officers, prompting SWAT to fire at the suspect, shooting him in the chest, police say.

The man was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Authorities say the suspect is in critical but stable condition.

Details are still coming out. Stay with NBC Philadelphia for the latest developments.
