By the Way, the Phillies Play

In the wake of McNabb heading to D.C., let’s remember that our defending NL Champs are already there

Andy said it best, "It's a business."

By announcing one of the biggest trades in the history of Philadelphia sports on Easter Sunday during the first Major League Baseball game of the season, which just happened to be the Yankees and Red Sox, is it fair to say the Eagles made an effort to steal the spotlight from not only the Phillies, but from Boston and New York as well?

The East Coast is certainly buzzing. And some fans are certainly annoyed.

What do you think of the McNabb trade and the timing of it all?

“I think it’s terrible how the Eagles are attempting to steal the Phillies Opening Day thunder,” said John Goetaski, a long-time avid fan of both the Eagles and Phillies. “To announce it nationally during the first Sunday Night Baseball game of the year? It’s pretty messed up.”

Indeed it would be deviant. But the Eagles say it is absolutely untrue and an "unfair characterization."

"We're not trying to steal anybody's thunder," said Eagles SVP, Pamela Browner White.

"The notion that we sought to do anything other than improve our team...to even suggest that we could or would orchestrate" anything of the sort is outrageous, "especially in the age of social media," said White.

WIP's Howard Eskin agrees -- that the timing had nothing to do with the Phils but had everything to do with getting a deal done.

"Timing is when you're trying to make a trade and this was the best deal they could make," said Eskin.

Can we just agree then that it's a shame the deal went down when it did? The McNabb trade not only snatches the spotlight now, but  when the Phillies are (hopefully) in the midst of their fourth straight playoff run towards the end of summer and into the fall, who will be in the spotlight again?

Donovan McNabb beginning training camp as a Redskin.

Not to mention an inevitable Monday Night Football match-up that, at this rate, will land on Halloween night during Game 7 of the World Series.

The buzz will still be with the Birds.

Go figure.  Go Phillies.
