Philadelphia Suspends Parking Program for Electric Cars

The program allows electric car owners to reserve spots for charging stations they put up outside their homes.

Philadelphia is suspending a program that reserved on-street parking spots for the owners of electric vehicles amid complaints over the program's fairness.

Philly.com reports that City Council voted 11-6 on Thursday to place a moratorium on new electric-vehicle permits. The program allows electric car owners to reserve spots for charging stations they put up outside their homes.

Some residents call the program unfair, saying it essentially privatizes on-street parking spaces. Electric vehicle owners say cleaning up pollution is more important than arguing over parking.

Council members say the moratorium will allow the city to revamp the program.

Mayor Jim Kenney, who sponsored the legislation that created the parking permits a decade ago, says he'll sign the bill.
