It's gonna cost more to pass through toll booths on the Pa. Turnpike.

It's gonna cost you to zip through Pennsylvania in the new year.

Pennsylvania Turnpike officials are reminding motorists that tolls will rise by 25 percent in January on most of the Turnpike.

The increase is paying for mass transit subsidies and improvements to the state's roads and bridges under a transportation bill passed in 2007.

The toll increases hit the 545-mile Turnpike system on January 4, 2009.

The most common toll paid by passenger vehicles will go from 75 cents to 95 cents, while a typical truck's tolls will be $7.85, up from $6.25.

The turnpike's annual revenues will climb from $619 million to about $738 million.

Drivers in Eastern Pa. are going to be hit harder than out west. The only exceptions are some newly opened sections of the turnpike in western Pa.

It's the sixth rate change in 68 years. The most recent toll increase occurred four years ago.
