PHA May Be Punished For Sexual Harassment Claims

The board chairman of the Philadelphia Housing Authority says the agency may have to repay federal money if it was used to settle sexual harassment complaints against its embattled executive director.

Former Mayor John Street says the authority could have to repay grant money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development if it was involved in the settlements.

A PHA spokeswoman, however, denied the money would have to be repaid. She did not elaborate.

HUD spokeswoman Donna White said she could not speak about PHA specifically, but told The Philadelphia Inquirer settlements reached without HUD approve could be ruled "ineligible or unreasonable." If so, HUD would demand repayment.

White says federal guidelines require HUD approval for sexual harassment settlements, regards of the amount.

Greene is suspended while PHA investigates the harassment allegations.
