A northern New Jersey man has admitted conspiring with others to smuggle contraband, including marijuana and tobacco, into a federal pretrial detention facility where he was being held.
Federal prosecutors say 33-year-old Muhammad Subpunallah, of Orange, pleaded guilty Monday to a complaint charging him with conspiracy and an indictment charging him with a weapons offense.
He now faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced July 20.
Prosecutors say Subpunallah was arrested on the weapons charge in October 2011, and was held at the Essex County jail.
From September 2013 to February 2014, prosecutors say he directed a relative to deliver the contraband to a lawyer, who smuggled it into the jail in exchange for cash.
Subpunallah sent inmates to the attorney visitor room to meet with the lawyer and retrieve the contraband.
