NJ Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal New Year's Day Stabbing of Friend

Authorities say a man has admitted stabbing a friend to death inside a central New Jersey home after they fought on New Year's Day two years ago.

Monmouth County prosecutors say 30-year-old Victor Garzon-Alvarez pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated manslaughter in the death of 39-year-old Manuel Vilaseca-Cortez. Garzon-Alvarez is a Mexican national and Vilaseca-Cortez was an El Salvadorian, and both men lived in Long Branch.

The January 2013 stabbing occurred in the basement of a city home.

Prosecutors say the men spent the early morning hours of New Year's Day together before they started arguing. The stabbing occurred a short time later and Garzon-Alvarez — who wasn't hurt in the fight — soon fled the home.

Garzon-Alvarez faces a 15-year prison term when he's sentenced April 2.
