Philly's getting millions thanks to the stimulus and now we know where some of that money is going.
Mayor Nutter released information about the $13 million Recovery Act fund for Public Safety in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
“The investments will not only save lives but save jobs,” Mayor Nutter explained at a press conference. “With this Recovery Act funding we are able to provide better equipment and training for our police officers, invest in our priority areas of opportunities for ex-offenders and green job training, and provide job opportunities for hundreds of Philadelphians. This will have a real impact on this city and our citizens.”
In fact, the relief money will save or create over 350 jobs for Philadelphia.
The programs requiring the most money will be a $2.5 million high-tech Real Time Crime Center that will be set up at police headquarters, $3 million spent on crime prevention, re-entry services including green jobs training and mural arts programs for at risk youth.
Furthermore, the funds will affect three areas of city life -- economic, environmental and public safety.
The city will be receiving the money from the Byrne Grant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. The program was expanded due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which increased the total amount of funding available.
