Man Sentenced for Hit-and-Run That Injured Young Phils Fan

California man sentenced to one year in jail for hitting a 9-year-old Phillies fan in San Francisco after a Giants game

A 22-year-old man who acknowledged driving drunk during a hit-and-run crash in San Francisco that critically injured a 9-year-old boy visiting from Philadelphia has been sentenced to jail.

Andrew Alan Vargas was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty previously to one felony count of driving under the influence causing injury and an allegation that he caused great bodily injury to Ryan White and his aunt.

Vargas was driving his pickup truck last August when he struck the boy while he was walking with his family in a crosswalk a few blocks from AT&T Park after a game between the Giants and Philadelphia Phillies.

The boy's parents said in a letter that on Friday he will undergo his fourth operation since the accident.

Vargas also received five years of probation, mandatory DUI classes and has to serve 100 hours of community service.
