Man Leaps Off GWB Despite Efforts to Save Him

A man has apparently leapt to his death off the George Washington Bridge despite efforts to save him.

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police department says the unidentified man jumped from the south span of the bridge at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Spokesman Joe Pentangelo tells The Record newspaper that police and emergency personnel were trying to talk the man back to safety when he jumped near the mid-span of the bridge.

Police had closed two traffic lanes and pedestrian and bike pathways on the bridge during the incident. Traffic delays were continuing as of Sunday evening.

Pentangelo says the harbor unit is currently attempting to retrieve the man's body from the Hudson River.
