Man Charged in Fatal Wheelchair Hit-and-Run

Police arrested and charged a man accused of fatally striking a man in a wheelchair with his car and fleeing the scene of the accident in Atlantic City.

Police arrested and charged a man accused of fatally striking a man in a wheelchair with his car and fleeing the scene of the accident in Atlantic City.

Back on July 9, around 9:30 p.m., Daniel Tavarez, 45, was struck by a car while crossing the intersection of Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue in a wheelchair. Tavarez was pronounced dead at the scene.

After locating the alleged hit-and-run vehicle, police identified the driver as Leo Strazzeri, 42, according to investigators. Police then located and questioned Strazzeri. After investigating the crash, police charged Strazzeri with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Strazzeri was also issued multiple motor vehicle violations including failure to report an accident and reckless driving.

Strazzeri was arrested Thursday afternoon. He will be lodged at the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $50,000 full cash bail.

Second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident carries a five to 10 year New Jersey State Prison sentence.
