Police arrested a man for allegedly stealing utility pole ground wires in Lower and Middle Township.
Daniel Delano of Rio Grande in Middle Township is accused of cutting the copper wires from at least 74 poles in Lower Township and around a dozen in Middle Township.
The ground wires serve as a safety mechanism in case electrical transformers are struck by lightning. Altering the power equipment can lead to outages and uneven voltage capable of damaging electronics inside homes.
Delano is charged with theft for the Lower Township crime spree. Police say additional charges are pending for the Middle Township thefts.
His bail is set at $35,000.
