Lower Merion Residents Against Tax Proposal

People living and working in Lower Merion Township are faced with the threat of higher taxes.

On Wednesday night, more than 100 people arrived at a town meeting where they pleaded with commissioners to back off a budget proposal that would raise property taxes by 12.7%.

“This is a waste of time, they already know what they’re going to do,” said Emilio Rande of Belmont Hills. “There’s nothing you can do about it.”

Rande is a retiree who lives on fixed incomes. Many other residents affected are in a similar situation.

While some residents were in support, most were against Lower Merion’s proposed property tax increase.

However, some Township officials say that the increase is needed to cover critical services like public safety roads, sewers and infrastructure.

“If it’ll keep the level of services at the level I’m used to seeing them then I’m all for higher taxes,” said Eric Foster of Bala Cynwyd.
