Homicide by Vehicle Charges in Pennsylvania Triathlete's Death

A man has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence in an accident that killed a woman jogging in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Fifty-year-old Michael Scavone of Harveys Lake was charged Friday in Luzerne County in the June 7 crash that killed 31-year-old triathlete Paula Jones of Factoryville.

Prosecutors allege that Scavone had a blood-alcohol level more than two and one-half times the legal limit for driving more than two hours after the accident. Scavone is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury.

Prosecutors sought $500,000 bail, citing a criminal record that includes previous DUI arrests. Defense attorney John Pike sought bail of $100,000, saying his client has been cooperating and cares for an elderly mother. Bail was set at $400,000.
