Too Hot for School

Heat prompts Philly summer school dismissal Tuesday

Philadelphia's public schools are closing their summer programs early because of oppressively hot temperatures.

The School District of Philadelphia is sending students home early Tuesday because of safety concerns prompted by temperatures expected to crest in the mid-90s with high humidity.

School officials say the conditions make heat illness possible so students attending the Summer Learning and More program are being dismissed at the end of the academic session.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of the region through Tuesday evening.
