Gay Rights Groups Pressure Toomey on Vote

Gay rights groups are asking Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey to support a bill that aims to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that a key vote on the bill is scheduled for Monday evening in Washington, and one more vote is needed for it to move forward in the Senate. But the Inquirer reports that the bill has little chance of passage in the House of Representatives, meaning that Toomey's vote is mostly symbolic.

A spokesman for Toomey, a Republican, says the senator is undecided.

State Rep. Brian Sims, a gay Philadelphia Democrat, wrote Toomey an open letter Friday urging him to support the bill.
