Dog Thrown From Moving Car: SPCA

The Delaware County SPCA is searching for the owner of a small dog that was tossed from a moving car in Chester on Wednesday.

The Delaware County SPCA is searching for the owner of a small dog that was tossed from a moving car in Chester on Wednesday.

Investigators say it happened on Highland Avenue in Chester. The female puppy, identified as a Westie-Poodle mix no older than 4-months-old, was tossed out of a car driving north on Highland, according to officials. A witness told the SPCA the car was traveling at least 35 miles per hour. Investigators also say the dog was still wearing a collar and leash when she was tossed.

Officials say Mary Alice Pleniger was trailing the car and saw the dog being tossed. She described the car as a four-door gray Honda Civic or Hyundai sedan. She was unable to record a license plate number however.

A car in the next lane managed to swerve out of the way and did not strike the puppy, according to the SPCA. The dog ran over to a fence alongside the road. Pleniger pulled her car over and retrieved the animal. The SPCA states the driver who tossed the dog hit the brakes and then immediately drove of after seeing Pleniger rescue the animal.

Pleniger, who is trained and certified in animal first aid, according to the SPCA, did an assessment of the dog and determined no bones were broken. She then called former City of Chester Animal Control Officer Dave Schlott who contacted a Delco SPCA Humane Investigators. Schlott then picked up the dog and transported her to the Delco SPCA Adoption Center in Media where she was renamed “Raggedy Ann.”

The SPCA determined Raggedy Ann did not suffer any severe wounds but had a scrape on her back right paw as well as slight bruising on her lower abdomen. They continue to evaluate her.

"We need people to be these defenseless animals’ eyes and ears, like Mary Alice was for Raggedy Ann,” said Justina Calgiano, Director of Community Relations at the Delaware County SPCA.

If you have any information on Raggedy Ann’s owner, please call Delco SPCA Humane Investigator Bill Vernon at 610-566-1370 x214. If no owner comes forward, the SPCA says Raggedy Ann will be placed up for adoption next Wednesday at noon.
