Child Killed in Hit-And-Run

Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 21-month-old boy and seriously injured his mother in South Philadelphia Saturday night.

It happened around 8:23 p.m. at 6th & Washington Streets. Police say the 20-year-old woman and her child were crossing the street when they were hit by a silver Mercedes with tinted windows and chrome rims.

The child was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. The mother is in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to authorities.

One eyewitness, who did not give NBC Philadelphia his name, called the hit-and-run inhumane.

"The lady was screaming. I mean I just heard a huge crash. He just continued to run her over...did not stop..he paused a little bit and turned down an alley."

The driver fled and the car -- a silver Mercedes -- was last seen on 6th Street, according to investigators.
