Until now, the U.S. response to financial institutions that made stupid bets has ranged from execution - we let Lehman Bros. Inc. die, spooking credit markets - to reparations - we bailed out American International Group Inc. and, with it, codependent gamblers such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Deutsche Bank.
